Posture…

Posture: a particular way of dealing with or considering something; an approach or attitude.

Posture is one of the non-verbal cues that communicates immense amounts of information even when it may not be intentional. Every so often a team, organization, family or individual needs to take a step back and evaluate if their “posture” is communicating truthfully about who they are and what they value. In the push and pull of life, it is very easy to just keep moving while adding anything that comes our way. It takes discipline and pausing to be intentional with what we do and in a busy culture pausing is hard. It is worth the time to pause, observe, evaluate and then take action to correct what may be mis-alligned.

It is not enough to be busy…the question is what are we busy about.” ~ Thoreau

Questions for Evaluation:

  • Can I quickly identify what we are about? Is that clear in our daily living?

  • If you are the leader of a team, family or organization, ask “What am I contributing to this environment that needs to change?”. Are you willing to be honest?

  • Is what we present really reflective of what we believe and how we live?

  • What would someone walking into my context see, feel, and sense just by walking in?

  • What is being communicated in words or lack thereof about who you are and what you value?

  • Are you able to see clearly and be honest about your posture? If not, ask someone from the outside to help you.

  • Ask people new to your organization or context, “what are the unwritten rules of this organization?”.
